GEORGE BARNSBY BLOG NO.962 FRIDAY 30TH OCTOBER 2009 INCORPORATING COPAM (COMMITTEE OF PEACE AND MULTICULTURALISM) barnsby@blue yonder.co.uk
Saturday, October 31st, 2009DAY THIRTY SIX OF A PLANET NOT FACED WITH EXTINCTION ?
It is sad to have to report again today that the only man who can save
the planet from destruction and who promised only 36 days ago that he would
destroy all nuclear weapons, namely Barack Obama, has again disappointed us
all by signing a Bill which he admits is the greatest sum ever known and
which would have covered the sum of all US military operations and pay for
US troops proper medical treatment .
He praises his ‘outstanding’ vice president, Joe Biden, his
attorney-general Eric Holden, defence secretary Bob Gates who served under 8
presidents and thus knew what defense entailed, also Admiral Mike Miller,
Mike Muller chair of the joint chiefs of staff. He then comes as near a
figure as I can find which is that the Government Accountability Office last
year reported a loss of $278 billions and his Bill exceeds that.
How sad that the most powerful man in the world should ignore the
majority of the citizens of his own land who are opposed to the illegal,
racist and unwinnable wars Obama supports and ignores the indiscriminate
deaths of hundreds which continue every day that Obama fails to change his
policy.
Once again I apologise for not quoting the exact words of Obama but
they can be found on his website www.Whitehouse.gov
WOLVERHAMPTON AND SURVEILLANCE BY MI5..
The publication of the authorised history of MI5 by Christopher Andrew
and the modern disclosure that police and MI5 surveillance is common, led me
to consider my own position as secretary of Wolverhampton Communist Party
for almost 50 years. Looking up Freedom of Information Act on Google I was
astonished to find that it concerned the US act of the same name and when I
asked Google for details of the British act of the same name it failed to
produce anything of significance, so I must surmise that it is operated by
the Head of Parliament as the US Act is acted by Congress. If this is the
case the parliamentarian concerned is the Speaker John Bercow who could, and
I’m sure would order a debate on the causes of the war in Iraq and ask for a
motion to arrest Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. I shall pursue legal
assistance from such people as my friend Warinder Juss and various lawyers
who act for working people to find if there is anything on me and if there
is to what extent it is true.
HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS.
Liberty-Human Rights Organisation speaks of its successes in forcing
the House of Lords to outlaw the Modern Day Slavery Bill and protect some of
the most vulnerable people from modern slavery. This refers to an amendment
to the Policing and Crime Bill. If the Bill were passed it would mean that
if most of the conduct leading to an alleged crime occurs in the UK then a
British court would have the option to refuse extradition if they believe it
goes against the interests of justice. This amendment has not yet gone to
MPs nor will it unless the House of Lords votes for it next week. So write
to your MP and ask them to lobby their party to support next week’s vote on
extradition on email@liberty-human-rights.org.uk
Another complicated issue is Secret Inquests which again you are asked
to lobby your MPs to support. The government is seeking powers to allow the
Lord Chancellor to replace public inquests with inquiries under the
Inquiries Act 2005. Jury inquests are at present necessary into any death
where the government is implicated Libery believes that jury inquests are
vital in ensuring transparency and accountability from the government but
also protecting the rights of victims’ families. This bill goes back to the
House of Commons next week and you are asked to lobby your MP and ask them
to support the Lords amendments and reject the government proposals.
COMMUNIST AND OTHER HISTORY
Sean Creighton in his November Information Bulletin gives information of
the last few performances ending on 31 October of a play about William
Cuffey ‘Chartist Rising’ which is showing at The Space a pub on the Isle of
Dogs London. Tele 020 7515 7799.
Also 1848 Europe’s Year of Revolution when London workers threatened to
take by force what their corrupt government would not give them: The Six
Demands of the People’s Charter. The Middle Class rush to arm as Special
Constabulary. The police and army deploy to defend the banks, bridges and
government buildings. In the coffee houses and pubs small groups of the poor
plan their insurrection. A black tailor and a young Irish artist, an office
cleaner and a small-time junk dealer are the focus of this story of
idealism, loyalty and betrayal in ‘the last revolution. Sounds modern,
doesn’t it? Shades of today when Alan Johnson Home Secretary and once
Communist and Mandelsohn once in the YCL stand ready to betray the working
class
Today also comes news of A People’s History of the West Midlands by its
author Chris Harman who will be speaking about his book at a Curry Night on
Friday 13th November 6-30 to 9.30pm at Stirchley Community Centre, Pershore
Rd. Birmingham when rarely seen footage of anti-fascist demonstrations such
as the Battle of Cable Street Stepney in 1936 will be shown also Lewisham
1977 and Demonstrations of today.
There has also been progress in contacting Rosemary Logan who we last
met at spending her fragile life attending an unknown Communist’s sister.
Tonight after another fruitless attempt to ring her I had the bright idea of
asking Eddie Dare of the Socialist History Society if she came to SHS
meetings when he interrupted me, first to explain that he was following me
as a man of ninety by himself being that age before this year is out and
then almost solved my problem by mentioning that Rosemary had been busy
crossing London to meet Cicely daughter of Bill Pomerey an American who
fought in the Second World War against the Japanese in the Philippines
where his book was published. Celia was as influential a Communist as her
father and we are now at the last stage of our investigation by being able
to ask Rosemary Logan the name of the Pomeray book.
NOTES AND QUERIES.
Today our local paper the Express and Star found for us the name of
the secretary of the Wolverhampton Branch of the Burma Star Association. His
name is given as Charles Maber. This seems to be in variance with another
person who lives in Sabrina Rd. Tettenhall where we believe their monthly
meetings take place at the Ex Services Institute in Brickkiln Street at
midday on the last Friday of the month which would have ruled out my
attending. The same thing applies to today when Members of the Burma Star
Association were invited to have tea with the Mayor of Wolverhampton
Councillor Surjan Singh Dura but to which I was not invited despite the
Mayor’s Secretary who attends to invitations and knows that I am a Burma
Vet. A pity since I have the largest and most up to date list of Burma
Veterans and we are all due to have a proper reunion, but that has not
materialised yet.
HONOUR OUR WAR VETERANS WHILE THEY ARE STILL
WITH US.
