MY SEVENTH HEAVEN - ME AND FOOTBALL.
If Brooke Adams, one of my American friends connected with the
International Association of Jazz Record Collectors could say it was near
Heaven to have discovered the music of Teddy Weatherford recorded by the
China-India-Burma musicians during World War II (see last night’s BLOG
No.556) I can claim to be in my seventh heaven for having discovered that by
the football results yesterday of Arsenal winning and being second in the
Premiership and Wolves winning 5-1 and going top of the Championship I am at
present in a state of bliss, increased today by the news that both Chelsea
and Liverpool today could only draw.
. And that not only for the football prowess of the two teams I support,
but also their political understanding that our football clubs should
remain in the ownership of Britons instead of foreign tycoons who, by
lending the money instead of giving it as they pretended are likely to
bankrupt the top clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester United, Aston Villa,
Manchester City, Liverpool and the like and could even mean the teams cease
to exist if there is an economic crisis on the scale of the 1930s.
Compare this with Arsenal and Wolves which lead the fight for their
clubs to remain British and under local control. How long will it take for
other clubs to learn that English ownership is not only a patriotic duty,
but also the most prudent way to run clubs.

HURRICANE GUSTAV AND MICHAEL MOORE’S LETTER TO GOD
Talking of patriotism, it has been left to Michael Moore to be the
first to analyse the effects of this latest disaster and he does it in
typical ironic and black humour fashion.
He addresses an open letter to God.
Dear God, he says, the other day the Rev.James Dobson asked all
believers to pray for a storm on Thursday night so that the Obama
acceptance speech outdoors in Denver would have to be cancelled.
I see that You have answered the Rev.Dobson’s prayers - except that the
storm you have sent is not over Denver, but on its way to New Orleans! In
fact you have scheduled it to hit Louisiana at exactly the moment that
George W.Bush is to deliver his speech to the Republican National
Convention.
Now, Heavenly Father, we all know You have a great sense of humour and
impeccable timing. To send a hurricane on the third anniversary of Katrina
AND right at the beginning of the Republican Convention was, at first blush,
a stroke of divine irony. I don’t blame You. I know that you are angry that
the Republicans tried to blame You for Katrina by calling it an ‘Act of
God’ - when the truth was that the hurricane itself caused very few deaths
in New Orleans. But over one thousand people died as a result of the
mistakes and neglect caused by human, not You.
But it now appears that You haven’t only been having a bit of fun with
Hurricane Gustav but that as the Rev Falwell said you made 9/11 happen
because of all those gays and abortions and Katrina because as Pat Robertson
and other Republicans said of America’s, ‘ wholesale slaughter of unborn
children.’.

of a renewed hurricane has scared the lives out of the Republicans as the
decision of George Bush not to attend the Republican Convention and perhaps
postpone it altogether and it looks as if a Democratic Party victory is now
much nearer. But let it be hoped that the tragedy also affects Obama and
leads to his rejection of the war in Iraq with his war mongering partner
Biden and stirs the great American public who demand an end to the war in
Iraq NOW.

WOLVERHAMPTON - A MODEL FOR BRITAIN OF A THREE PARTY COALITION AGAINST THE
W AR IN IRAQ.
Whether this has been an Act of God or pure chance, but since the
local elections on May 1, Wolverhampton has been in a position to lead the
country with a coalition of Tories who oppose the war in Iraq, 5 Lib-Dems
who all oppose the war and New Labourites on the Council who may or may not
number more than one known to oppose the war. The possibility of this
occurring depends very largely on whether Councillor Neville Patten the new
Conservative leader of the Council is for or against the war. We have asked
him, but so far have not received a reply. Perhaps he is on holiday? We
shall ring him tomorrow to find out.

OBAMA THE WAR CRIMINAL AND HIS EQUALLY CRIMINAL RUNNING MATE, JOE BIDEN.
It has not yet sunk in among the Commentariat as Media Lens has called
the most powerful spokespersons in the world, the media, that their duty is
to question, particularly at the Democratic Convention this week and the
Republican Convention next week that Obama has betrayed the people who
believed him when he said his policies if elected would be the RADICAL
CHANGE that people want and the ENDING OF THE WAR IN IRAQ. The fact that
Obama has reneged on both these promises needs to be put first of all to the
media commentators since it is they we depend on for a realistic view of
world politics and particularly the American presidential election which is
so important not only to peace loving Americans, but also to the peace
loving citizens of the world.

MORE ON JAZZ AND GEORGE BARNSBY.
From the 2007-08 Membership Directory of the International Association
of Jazz Record Collectors I cull this item from Vol 40. It comes from an
American Ron Pikeilek and he says: I recently received a message from
fellow IAJRC member, Brooke Adams of Palm Springs wanting to know whether
there were any recordings available from Teddy Weatherford when he recorded
in Calcuttta, India. It seems the Museum had presentations pertaining to the
China-India-Burma theatre of war during World War II and that Weatherford
was heard by many GIs in that theatre through Armed Forces Radio. Basically Weatherford was covered by
two recordings and Ron discovered that he had one of them the title of which
was Jazz and Hot Dance in India.
Then we attended the Schoolcraft Jazz Fest and he got into conversation
with Jim Gallert and Weatherford’s name was mentioned. Jim immediately
recognised the name, and Jim said he had a copy of Jazum 9. I asked
him to make a copy and send it to Brooke. The following Monday I emailed
Brooke and his response was that this is about as close to heaven as he will
get. It seems that for years the China-India-Burma veterans had published
the Jing Bao Journal and recognised that Weatherford besided playing at the
Grand Hotel Calcuttta also broadcast to the troops on Armed Forces Radio and
learned that Jimmy Weatherspoon sang with him on some of those broadcasts.
I think that it is as near heaven to me to hear of these American jazz
enthusiasts who I can contact asking for information on the wherabouts and
health of George Shearing and gain their attention to replicating the
sessions of the Furthest East Rhythm Club. Particularly now that Harry
Johnson is copying the actual recordings with which we regaled our fellow
members all those years ago. I am indebted to Harry for introducing me to
IAJRC, but I now have my first copy of the quarterly journal of the Society
and much, much more about British Jazz. But this is the end of tonight’s
instalment

BARAK OBAMA AND THE WAR IN IRAQ
Here is what Obama said on the war in Iraq - the great chasm that
divides humanity today - on March 19 2008: ‘Here is the truth fighting a
war without end will not force the Iraqis to take responsibility for their
own future. And fighting a war without end will not make the American people
safer. So when I am Commander-in-Chief I will set a new goal on day one: I
will end this war. Not because politics compels it. Not because our troops
cannot bear the burden - as heavy as it is. But because it is the right
thing to do for our national security, and it will ultimately make us
safer’.
Here is what the same man said on Thursday 28th August 2008: I love
this country and so do you and so does John McCain. The men and women who
serve in our battlefields may be Democrats, Republicans and
Independents, but they have fought together, bled together, and some of them
have died together under the same proud flag. They have not served a Red
America or a Blue American - they have served the United States of America.
This is the greatest betrayal of Americans who thought that Obama would
take them out of the war in Iraq since Washington’s defeats in the Civil
Wars of
the 1780s or the Tet Offensive in Vietnam. Obama has betrayed himself and
his nation who expect him to end the war and it is no wonder, therefore,
that he has chosen a notorious war monger, Joe Biden to be his
vice-president. Shame on you, Obama from whom so much was expected.
And where are all the left wing critics of Bush? I can find no trace of
protests at the Obama/Bliden war ticket by such anti-Bush people as Gore
Vidal, or Chomsky, or even George Soros. It has been left to Michael Moore
to suggest that Bush and Cheney be arrested as they leave the White House
for the last time in November and Moore has produced yet another broad side
this time a copy of what he wrote on September 11 2005, two weeks after
Hurricane Katrina, which Moore says is every bit as relevant today as it was
when he sent it being called A Letter to All those who Voted for George
WE.Bush.
Moore asks that on the fourth anniversary of 9/11 how it feels as an
American, Democrat, Republican, or Non-Voting. Are we safer now than
before
9/11? When men who have never served in the military, send our young
servicemen into battle, do you think they know how to conduct a war . Do
they know what it means to have your legs blown off in a war which posed no
threat to the American people. Do you think that turning over important
government services to private corporations have resulted in better services
for the people? With the nation’s debt at an all time high do you think it
a good idea to tax cut the rich? Do you believe in Jesus? Did he not say
that we would be judged by how we treat the least among us? And so Moore’s
indictment goes on. But see it for yourselves by down loading Michael

liberal commentator such as Gore Vidal, Chomsky or even George Soros seem
to be making an equivalent protest and that Moore is now in danger of being
assassinated by crack pots such as those who did away with the Kennedy
Brothers and whose only winning ticket would be the anti-war alliance of
Elizabeth Kennedy and an anti-war Obama, KENNEDY/OBAMA.

A FURTHER INSTALMENT OF JAZZ AND ITS CONNECTIONS WITH WOLVERHAMPTON AND THE
JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES.
On BLOG 554 we explained why I lived in fear of seeing my BLOG disappear
before my very eyes and that not having the computer savvy to disconnect
this item from the BLOG I would place a further instalment of this epic on
the BLOG until the tale was complete and so if anything were lost it would
only be the last instalment. And tonight I start with the significance of
my near relation Don Rendell and his importance in the history of Jazz. The
Don Rendell/Ian Carr quintet, (and I quote from the sleeve of my copy of
the original LP) were both innovators who were voted top of the Melody
Maker poll of 1967. They were both masters of their respective instruments
,
Don on saxophone and Ian on trumpet, both played music written and arranged
by themselves and both contributed equally to the success of the Quintet. We
will come back to both of them in due course.
Meanwhile we return to David Holmes and his contribution to the
Trumpet, Bilston and its uniqueness of being the only venue which plays jazz
every day of the week 52 weeks of the year and Dave’s self deprecating
response to my calling him a world renowned drummer. Dave admits that he did
play once with John Dankworth at Walsall Town Hall when he was the drummer
in Tommy Burton’s Rock and Roll Combo when they were on the same Bill as
John Dankworth who knew both George Shearing and Duke Ellington. He and
Dankworth’s excellent drummer, Johnny Butts, met up in the loo where, Butts
was standing on the lavatory seat with his electric razor plugged into the
loo light socket. He slipped and his foot went into the loo itself. Dave
steadied him as best he could and they both had a good laugh about it.
Dave’s band did the first slot and the players then drifted to the bar while
Dave stood in the wings to watch and learn. But when Dankworth resumed his
drummer fell off his chair and was obviously hurt quite badly. Dankworth was
torn between his efforts to keep the show going and his concern for Butts.
Some went to help buts, but, in the words of Dave Holmes, the band were
still without the main muso in the engine room. He hesitated for a moment ,
straightened out the drums and jumped behind them keeping time without
interfering with the now extended arrangement. He was happy to see a look of
relief on Johnny Dankworth’s face as the music stabilised. We carried on
like that for a while until Butts felt better. Dankworth smiled and he and
Johnny both said, ‘thank you’, and I proudly stepped down. Neither Butts
nor Dankworth are likely to recall Dave’s name but Dankworth may well
remember the incident. Butts unfortunately died a few years later in an
accident in Spain.

THE HORROR OF SEEING MY BLOG DISAPPEAR BEFORE MY VERY EYES.
This was my experience a couple of nights ago. I have embarked on a
very long and intricate item on my connection with jazz with the memory of
that nightmare uppermost in my mind, fearing a repeat of something that has
happened before. So last night I decided that even if the jazz item was
incomplete, I could not finish it before 2am and so skipped the BLOG.
Tonight I find the item still unfinished so I thought I would print out what
I had written in case it disappeared when I found that I didn’t know how to
print it out and so, with fingers tightly crossed I brought the BLOG to a
halt, sent it, and fortunately it didn’t disappear but behaved properly and
became ’sent’ and then I was able to print out a copy. But the result is
that I am sending out this EXTRA Bog. and if I can’t complete my jazz item
tomorrow I may have to send another EXTRA. So I will mention what the other
items are and hope to finish by 12-30am.
Top of the list is the New Labourites intentions to invade Russia if
they don’ obey the instructions of NATO a friend suggested that Miliband had
better take his passport with him, because no one else in Britain will
follow him. But I say that Brown and his cabinet are not only war criminals
for invading Iraq, but they are perverts in even suggesting it and now with
organisations such as NATO and perhaps even the Court of Human Rights at the
Hague being white dominated that Britain is now being white supremacist and
quite unsuited to organise the Olympic Games 2012.
The other two items are the firm Wilson Govern Ltd set up to promote
Wolverhampton as the most important city in Britain for Culture, Education,
Sport and Business for 2009 has still not contacted me whose BLOG has the
same aims, nor can I find anyone who knows about them. Lastly I have asked
Neville Patten now leader of Wolverhampton city council whether he is
opposed to the war in Iraq, but he shows no sign of answering me. The same
applies to the chief executive of the council, Richard Carr, who .
refuses to answer my questions of who runs and organises the city.

THE OLYMPIC GAMES AND GORDON BROWN THE MURDERER.
One more day when the murderers are at large and innocent civilians
die. Brown seems not to have opened his mouth to day and no doubt dreams of
things getting better, but as the Russians talk of the Cold War returning as
NATO supports George W.Bush’s aim to site missiles across Poland time waits
for no man and just as Michael Moore suggest that Bush and Cheney be
arrested for war crimes, so Brown should be arrested NOW, even if it has to
be through a Citizen’s Arrest which Lance Dunkley and I have made of Rob
Marris, in whose constituency we live. So apart from using the BLOG we have
spent much of today spreading the news we announced last night that the
only justification for holding the 2012 Olympics in imperialist and racist
Britain is that Boris Johnson who will be in charge of both London and the
Games is against the war in Iraq. Today I have spread this idea to other
progressive organisations. First the trade unions both in Britain and abroad
including the trade unions in Iraq including the oil trade unions fighting
to prevent the puppet US government which is prepared to sell Iraq’s
greatest
asset, which is why the war was started - oil. Then copies of yesterday’s
BLOG have been circulated to most of the progressive journalists who have
borne the heat of the battle to end the war in Iraq of whom I shall mention
journalists in the Guardian and Observer the best known names probably being
Geoffrey Wheatcroft, George Monbiot, Larry Elliott and William Keegan. I
must also mention our local paper, the Express and Star which has the honour
of being the only regional newspaper I know which has consistently opposed
the war in Iraq almost since its start. Tomorrow I shall go through Housmans
Peace Diary and circularise peace organisations throughout the world. No
stone should be left unturned to ensure that Gordon Brown and his cabinet
are put under lock and key.

WHERE ARE YOU WILSON GIVEN LTD?
Here is a company devoted to the same objective as this BLOG namely to
promote Wolverhampton as the greatest City in Britain. I started with their
BLOG of 21 July 2008, but despite their connection with the Express and
Star, Wolverhampton Community Radio etc I have no way of communicating with
them. So I am now dependent on them replying to my email which I hope they
will any day now.

JAZZ AND ITS CONNECTIONS WITH WOLVERHAMPTON AND THE JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES.
It is a long and interesting connection between my interest in jazz and
the communities I have lived in. It begins in the 1930s when I learned that
this was Afro-Caribbean music associated with the liberation of black people
and I was associated with George Shearing, the blind pianist who was born in
the same year (1919) as myself in the same locality (Battersea, London).
Move forward to 1946 and at the London School of Economics where I met my
future wife, Esme whose brother married Margaret Rendell was brother to Don
Rendell who was a pioneering New Jazz saxophonist associated with the Don
Rendell and Ian Carr quintet. Now Don became an ardent Jehovah’s Witness and
because they were prohibited from playing on a Sunday Don virtually
sacrificed his career to his religion. I also discovered that the
Witnesses suffered second only to the Jews in the death camps of Hitler
because they would not obey any earthly authority. Don also provided me with
video made by the witnesses of their experiences. Moving back this time, I
was associated in Burma with the Furthest East Rhythm Club in the World
which was a unique cultural feature of World War II and was interrupted in
its eighteen month existence with a membership of about 50 by the Japanese
offensive which was to have conquered India and join up somewhere in the
middle east with Hitler’s forces. It ended however with the forgotten 14th
Army staying put, being surrounded by the Japanese and being supplied by air
for three months in what was then the largest air lift ever known. When we
returned to England after the war, the two RAF men who had been responsible
for setting up the Club, Harry Johnson and his inseparable friend Ken
Allsop, and me who
had been in charge of the record library tried to interesting the jazz
fraternity in replicating the record sessions we had held. Ken Allsop was
well qualified to lead the Rhythm Club having been associated before the
war with a Rhythm Club in Nottingham as well as being in the RAF and
able to transport records and the precious gramophone which we soldiers were
unable to do. Their famous swoops into Calcutta bringing back to Imphal a
fresh batch of records was rewarded very many years later when a catalogue
of the US International Association of Record Collectors referred to a
pianist Teddy Weatherford of which Harry says in the jazz slang of the day,
‘It reminds me that Ken Allsop and I dug Teddy at the Grand in Cal (short
for Calcutta) while on leave together. He was a nice guy . After the band
finished for the night he stopped to play the piano for us fans and chatted
of the days in Chicago in the 1920s with Louis etc.’
After the war we tried to get jazz people to replicate our sessions. So
far this has come to naught, despite the fact that our very extensive and
humorous
recordings eventually found their way to the National Jazz Archive at
Leyton, Essex. And this is how the matter stood for almost fifty years.
But we learned recently that Sir Jack Hayward , multi-millionaire
patriot and financist
of Wolverhampton football club had been a flyer in Burma and must have used
the Imphal air field and might even have known about our Furthest East
Rhythm
Club in the World. And Sir Jack is a very influential man who is the patron
of the Burma Star Association. With the celebration of IVY Day recently we
still have not interested the jazz fraternity in replicating our sessions,
although we live in hopes and have recently extended our efforts into the
international sphere with contacts with the IAJRC in America who ought to be
able to allow me to contact George Shearing as well as give us news about
the Furthest East Rhythm Club since the Americans are much more meticulous
about recording their jazz activities and will surely eventually discover
that the Furthest East Rhythm Club is a unique cultural event of World War
2.
But still that isn’t the end of the story. Perhaps we were not the
Furthest East Club. Perhaps the Yanks who flew supplies across the Hump from
Imphal on the Burmese border to the beleaguered Chinese troops had a Rhythm
Club further east than ours. And then one day when I was taken by one of my
sons to Jazz Club 90 at Albrighton in Shropshire I came across a brilliant
pianist, Dan Smith who, as is my wont, I acquainted with the story of
Imphal when he staggered me by suggesting that he was of Thai extraction and
perhaps his forefathers had a Club even further East than us!

A NOTICE TO BORIS JOHNSON ON THE OLYMPICS 2012
Britain is a deeply imperialist and racist country. To bring the
Olympics here after the successful games in China is a deep insult to all
the non-white people in the world (roughly 6 billion to 1 billion) who are
the victims of the Neo-Conservatives of the USA and the racist attitudes of
Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and the whole tribe of New Labour who I have called
worse than perverts in disgracing the Socialist traditions of our country
built up our working people. Moreover this corrupt ruling class of ours is
at present led by the old Etonian, David Cameron, who supports the war in
Iraq and who fails the democratic test of public servants replying when
addressed by even the lowliest citizen such as myself. In addition it is not
even certain that there will be a country for the Games to take place in
because New Labourites follow the policy of George W.Bush and his Neo-Cons
of the New American Century of determination to provoke the Russians into
retaliation for siting missiles in Poland and thus re-igniting the Cold War
which led to the Second World War
But in this deeply worrying but only too realistic scenario there is
just one shadow of hope. This is that Boris Johnson is a firm opponent of
the war in Iraq. Boris has not advertised this fact of late, but at the
moment the future is in the hands of that aristocratic toff, educated at
Eton. The future of the Games and perhaps the future of the world rests with
Boris persuading enough toffs to follow his example. This is what I have
told Boris and it is essential that he responds.

MICHAEL MOORE AND THE US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
I write in a state of white hot fury as does Michael Moore of the
betrayal of Barak Obama who has taken for his running mate a supporter of
the war in Iraq . Michael writes, and I paraphrase him and leave out some
bits that are not familiar to us British people, that his new book goes
officially on sale today with the fancy title of Mike’s Election Guide. Its
cheap at just over 11 dollars from Amazon. Its got a cool quote on the back
by Republican congressman, Tom Davis that the Republican brand is a trash
can….If it were dog food they would take us off the shelf. And its got
200+ pages of facts and ideas that you won’t get anywhere else.
*For example: Does John McCain think it right to drop bombs on civilians,
(his own words), on heavily populated cities?
*Or: The only reason Social Security is running out of money is because
people who make over 102,000 dollars per year pay no social security tax
on what they make above
that. If they did there would be enough money in Social Security for the
next 75 years!.
* Or, Bring back the draft - but only for the rich. If they had to serve
they would not be so anxious to start ridiculous wars.
* Or, Why we must arrest Misters Bush and Cheney as the slip out of the
White House on January 20th for the crimes they have committed .
I’ve written this book to give some good arguments for Americans to
discuss the election with family and friends and laid out 12 Senate seats
and 30 House seats that we can win. I challenge the Democratic big wigs to
have some spine and not repeat the mistakes that they made in the past two
elections.
Michael ends by saying that he hopes you get a chance to read his book
and it gives you a much needed laugh and also a bit of inspiration as we

THE HORROR OF THE DISINTEGRATING BLOG.
There was no BLOG last night. I pressed the ’send’ button and watched
with horror as it disintegrated before my very eyes and left me only with a
title which I can’t even find now. There were two carefully prepared items.
The first was a reply to Rob Marris MP as to why he shouldn’t suffer a
Citizen’s arrest as an accessory to Gordon Brown and his hideous New Labour
clones and be locked up. The other item was on the American Election and
Obama’s disastrous choice of a warmonger to run with him in November. I
already have another email which refuses to leave my ‘outbox’ but I have
sent other emails today without any problem, so I can only plough on with
BLOG 552 and hope it doesn’t disintegrate on me again. To complete the
catalogue of disasters I began to see double something which hasn’t happened
to me for yonks but if it returns tonight could presage something serious
and bring the BLOGS to an end, temporarily or permanently.

THE PRIVATISATION OF OUR SOCIAL SERVICES.
Lord Adonis leads the parade of New Labour public servant war
criminals who should be locked up for his plans (approved by Brown) of
turning so-called failing primary schools into Academic Academies. This
should be opposed by all MPs who oppose the war in Iraq and Adonis made the
subject of a Citizen’s to prevent Brown not only continuing the slaughter in
Iraq but the almost as heinous act as privatising our social services. Once
again it must be stressed that the great abyss separating the modern world
is those who oppose the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and elsewhere
and those who support the continuation of the carnage of innocent people. As
I tried to explain in last night’s disappearing BLOG the easiest way to get
rid of the perverts who insist on war would be for those MPs of all parties
who oppose the war to recall Parliament and dismiss Brown and vote in a
coalition government of MPs of Labour MPs opposed to the war, Lib-Dems MPs
who opposed the war from 2003 and Tories opposed to the war. But since MPs
show no sign of doing this there arises the only alternative of carrying out
a Citizen’s Arrrest of Gordon Brown which only Lance Dunkley and myself have
suggested for Rob Marris our Wolverhampton MP and put our actions where our
words are and made the Citizen’s Arrest which Marris is contesting.

THE OLYMPICS ARE OVER - LONG LIVE THE OLYMPICS.
The 2008 Olympics have ended with displays at the beginning and end
that no other nation could possibly match and in between triumphs for
Chinese athletes and success for British athletes greater than anything any
one could have expected and now the 2012 Olympics come to Britain with Boris
Johnson, the Tory mayor of London waving both the Olympic flag and the
union jack and Lord Coe the Tory organiser of the events in Britain in 2012
and with the task of seeing that the new Olympic Stadium is built on time
and somewhere not too far from the budget allocated..
In the meantime the sorry tale must be told of Wolverhampton the town
that had facilities for track events of Olympic training standards and the
only rifle shooting range of Olympic standard. Frank Spittle, sportsman of
Wolverhampton is able to tell the whole story of how Aldersley stadium was built largely by the support of Councillor Harry Bagleyand why it is called Wolverhampton and Bilston Stadium. This BLOG will relate this story during the coming days.

WOLVERHAMPTON AND THE BATTLE OF TETTENHALL.
There has been significant progress in the last few days on getting the
campaign to decide on the site of the most important event in
Wolverhampton’s history. It will be recalled that we are hoping that Tony
Robinson of Time Watch ITV would be a sort of referee in getting an
investigation into whether the site of the Battle was at Tettenhall or
Wednesfield or even somewhere else and two camps have been established to
see this project through. On the side of Wednesfield Phil Bateman was active
when he was a Councillor and gingered up Wolverhampton city council and its
chief executive, Richard Carr to participate in this campaign which would
bring considerable prestige to the city, not to mention tourism and cash.
On the other side was a team of us in Henwood Road who saw that this
was the only possible site of the battle of this immensity and pictured
Anglo-Saxon troops hurling themselves down the slope from Tettenhall Heights
down to Smestow Brook where the Vikings retreated with their ill-gotten loot
and made their way via the Severn back to Scandinavia. These investigations
would be undertaken by our schools and teachers together with the city’s
archaeology teams such as the city archaeologist, the Wolverhampton
Archaeology Society, and societies such as the History and Heritage Society,
the WEA and particularly Carl Chinn the Brummie/Black Country historian.
Two recent events have changed the picture. Firstly we have managed to
contact Tony Robinson and we have been told that he and his team jointly
determine what jobs they undertake and that we shall receive an answer to
our request shortly.
The other important development has been a letter from Dr.David Horowitz
,
the author of Place Names of Staffordshire and the most important witness
for the Wednesfield option. But in fact Dr.Horowitz criticises the whole
project. He says the Time Team programme is about archaeology. But there is
no archaeology relating to the Battle of Tettenhall (or indeed any
Anglo-Saxon battlefield). Any archaeological investigations must patently be
fruitless, even if we knew where to start the exercise, which we don’t. The
battlefield, if indeed we are talking of a single site could be within an
area of dozens of square miles. I’m afraid the idea is quite absurd. He
ends, ‘I confirm that I would not wish to take up your kind offer to become
involved in any investigations into the site of the battle of Tettenhall’.
So
that’s an invitation to forget about the Battle of Tettenhall by an
extremely well qualified academic. I have communicated to every one of the
interested party named above and we shall see what they have to say
before we accept Dr.Horowitz’s advice.

MUCH AGAIN LEFT UNSAID.
It is exam time again and Wolverhampton’s ‘A’ level and GCSE results
are again under scrutiny with this wretched New Labour government making the
very existence of the school dependent on this year’s results with threats
to create Educational Academies and effectually privatise our schools This
must be avoided at all costs.
The USA vice- presidency. Has Obama selected a pro-war Vice president
and will the Democratic Convention next week overturn it and do as Michael
Moore suggests - select the Kennedy family representative thus making the
anti-war partnership complete OBAMA-KENNEDY. And many other items have not
been mentioned - but I’m off to bed.

GORDON BROWN PERVERT AND WAR CRIMINAL.
Nothing emphasises the perversions of Gordon Brown more than his
toleration of MI5’s slavish attachment to George W.Bush resulting in
Britain being tied up with Guantanamo and the horrors of torture renditions
and secrecy. Britain was opened up to George W.Bush’s plans of the
Neo-Cons to land their planes in British airports and take or transfer men
who have already been held perhaps for years from Britain to Guantanamo.
Some of this has surfaced yesterday as a High Court judgement ruled that
Binyam Mohamed, a British citizen, had been tortured to gain a confession
and that he is due to be tried for terrorist offences before a USA military
commission in Guantanamo. He faces the death sentence if found guilty .
Brown has not denied this particular case and, of course, continues his
support of Bush. All this emphasises that unless Bush, Blair and Brown are
locked up neither peace nor democracy can be guaranteed.

YET ANOTHER VICTIM OF THE FOOTBALL BOOTS THAT FAIL TO PROTECT PLAYERS’
METATARSALS.
The victim this week has been the captain of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC
who will be out of action for three months as a result of an injury during
the first match of the new season. I am due to visit the Wolves ground very
shortly at the invitation of Graham Hughes, the historian and keeper of the
trophy room at Wolves, and I shall certainly be asking to examine the boot
room at Wolves and examine the boots.
I have long argued that it is only in recent times that players have
sufferered from broken toes. That in the age of Billy Wright or Alex James
feet were protected by a steel and leather covering and such injuries were
almost unknown. Unless toes are protect by boots with a light-weight modern
steel or plastic covering these injuries will continue to recur. The problem
is the constant urge for greater accuracy in bending the ball and scoring
goals. But for players to use such boots is a form of self-mutilation. The
problem involves boot makers who are of US or other foreign makes. I have
written to Addidas and other foreign bootmakers telling them of the
undesirable affects of their products and asking what they will do about it.
So far without a reply and it is time I reminded them of the question. At
the other end is players anxious to wear boots that will allow them to score
such magnficient goals, but is, in the long run, as I have said it is a form
of self-mutilation. Other bodies concerned are the boards of management who
employ the footballers and the Football Association which controls the game.
Yet another is the footballers’ trade union, the The Professional
Footballers’ Association. I am particularly concerned with Arsenal which I
have supported for 75 years and Wolves who I have supported for 55 years
largely on the strength that these two teams are the only two determined to
see that teams remain in British hands and under local control. As the
economic crisis deepens and the teams under foreign control face financial
problems and even bankrupcy it is appropriate that the injury to the captain
of Wolves raises the question of the welfare of those who actually play the
game.

GORDON BROWN AND THE PERVERTS
A story in the Express and Star tonight tells of Brown’s pride on
his visit to British troops fighting in Afghanistan. He says they are the country’s true heroes
he says.
He told the troops of the 16th Air Assault Brigade that what they were doing
there was an incredibly important process of creating not only a terrorist
free Afghanistan, but an Afghanistan where there will be democracy and
people will have a stake in their country. Brown then went on to compare
the deeds of the army with our athletes at the Olympics saying that the troops do everyday what our Olymic heroes are doing over 14 days
Apart from telling Brown that he is a war criminal having invaded
a country against its will and the majority of the people in the world
consider Bush, Blair and Brown as the main terrorists in the world who should
be brought before the Court of Human Rights and charged with Crimes against
Humanity what more caan be said about Brown’s hypocrisy?
Well, on the same page of the Express and Star there is another story of
a Pervert locked up for possessing child abuse pictures, but shocking as
that is and the man is rightly locked up, what is the scale of that
perversion
compared with Brown’s illegal invasion of Afghanistan and the fury that we
who oppose
the war have against Brown. We can say that that he doesn’t make me feel
proud of our country, on the contrary it makes me feel ashamed of my
country, but, that is hardly strong enough. Brown perverts both himself and
our country with the continuing slaughter which he creates of innocent
Afghans, Iraqis and others. On the scale of human wickedness Brown’s crimes are greater
than that of those usually referred to as perverts.
Perhaps the depravity of Brown is best illustrated by a recent letter in
the Guardian signed by the MPs Jeremy Corbyn, Colin Challen, Lynne
Featherstone, Neil Gerrard, John Hemming, Lynne Jones, Gordon Prentice, and
Joan Walley in the perversions of nuclear weapons. It seems the government
is prepared to spend £3bn on replacing the UK’s 160 nuclear war heads. Even a
preliminary report should first be made to Parliament and not industrial
interests. Capital investment in the Atomic Weapons Establishment has
ballooned from ?24million to ?420million in just seven years and Parliament
has no voice in these matters. This is politics against the will of the
people and emphasises the need to lock up Brown

BARAK OSAMA AND HIS WARMONGERING CHOICE OF VICE PRESIDENTS.
The British press has now got hold of Michael Moore’s opinion of the
three leading contenders of Joe Bidden, Evan Bayh and Tim Caine all being
US Senators who support the war in Iraq, but none of them have picked up his
solution that Caroline Kennedy sister to the Kennedy clan who is not
directly involved in politics, but who was against the war in Iraq from the
beginning would be the only guarantee of success, the OBAMA-KENNEDY ticket.
Whether Obama can be persuaded to ask Caroline to stand with him, or
whether his mind has been made up and it will be a choice between these
three which will compromise Obana remains to be seen. It is an extraordinary
gesture of support for Obama that he now has the largest website in the world
raising unprecedentedly huge amounts of money for his election, but the
Democratic Convention takes place next week and perhaps it might have the
last word on both the vice-presidency and keeping the keynote of the
campaign as CHANGE.

MORE CHANGE.
The fact that the Wolverhampton Eye Infirmary is scheduled to move for
yet a third time while the rogue firm of St.Modwens Property Developers
creates havoc where ever it operates . This now includes not only the
dereliction of the Compton Rd. site, where their plans to build on the site
of a listed building have come unstuck because of lack of money , but also
the vast site of British Rover at Longbridge where car production has been
resumed, but by Chinese manufacturers operating in a tiny corner of the
site. It is now time to nationalise what remains of the car industry and it
ought to be led by surviving elements of the Combined Shop Stewards
Movement which was accused of ruining the industry, so Michael Edwardes was
called in to sack Red Robbo and when he succeeded found himself ordered to
close Longbridge and all car production in Britain ceased. Both Tony Benn
and Derek Robinson are hale if not exactly hearty and it will take both the
regenerated trade union movement and the left political wing of the labour movement
not only to restore our car industry, but also the whole industrial base of
Britain.
