Legendary poet and activist BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH IN PHOTO BOOK COLLABORATION.

Photographer Pogus Caesar launches new UK book. The foreword has been specially written by poet and playwright Benjamin Zephaniah.

‘Sparkbrook Pride’ features photographs of Sparkbrook residents and will being launched this spring in the UK.

Specially commissioned with funding from Be Birmingham’s Neighbourhood Management Programme it contains 70 black and white photographs of people in community settings by leading British photographer Pogus Caesar.

Residents from the West Indies, Ireland, Pakistan and India feature alongside the newer communities from Sudan, Afghanistan and Malawi.

What’s of interest, Caesar still uses an antique 1980s Canon Sureshot film camera, remarkable results.

Portrait Of The 1985 Handsworth Riots - Pogus Caesar - BBC1 TV . Inside Out.

Broadcast 25 Oct 2010. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ey7ijaXv6UQ

Birmingham film maker and photographer Pogus Caesar knows Handsworth well. He found himself in the centre of the 1985 riots and spent two days capturing a series of startling images. Caesar kept them hidden for 20 years. Why? And how does he see Handsworth now?.

The stark black and white photographs featured in the film provide a rare, valuable and historical record of the raw emotion, heartbreak and violence that unfolded during those dark and fateful days in September 1985.

Hello,

As Chairman of the 44 Club Rifle & Pistol Section, I was pleased to read Frank's life history, a man
dedicated to the sport of shooting.
I understand Frank was one of the founder members of the 44 Club, Lanesfield since the opening in 1945. An astonishing record. I and all
the members want to express our sincere thanks and appreciation for all the work done by Frank and his family for the sport here in the Midlands.
Well done Frank.

Ive been trying to find these articles online, for I have recently started researching it too (for a book im hoping to write) is there anywhere i can see these articles online?

I had been thinking... seeing as "many thousands were killed"... was perhaps... the confusion for tettenhall and wednesfield.. is that it stretched across the areas?
I didnt know of the ridge, but the idea of the ships using the smestow is a good one too

If anyone has these articles, or more info I would appreciate it if you would get in touch :)

Hi thee, dont know how or if i could help, but either way I would love to know more of the battle of tettenhall, I am hmm I guess you would say an amateur historian,(I would like to go a lot further and write a full book on My city and its rich history) I had my first article published last week in the express and star when Carl Chin put a double page feature in, 90% filled with my article on the founder of Wolverhampton, Lady Wulfrun, great (or is it great great...) grand daughter of Alfred the Great!... I have always been fascinated with my towns history, and the last few days i have been looking into the battle myself, i only have sparse knowledge of it so far, but from what I see, there may also be a battle sight at Wombourne too (and I think i may have found somethign in regards to that)

Anyhow.. if there is someway I can help... please feel free to get in touch (and if you have any more info on the battle I would love to hear it :) )

George Barnsby will be sadly missed by the Communist Party and the people of Wolverhampton. He was a outstanding person, a leader and an example to us all. A man who will not be replaced. He devoted his life to the liberation of working people.

So sad to hear this. Please accept my condolences. I only met George a couple of times during mid 1980's. At the time I was out of work and did some voluntary work at Key Books. Remember Esme was working there at the same time along with Don Brayford. George struck me as a principled person who was well respected through his pioneering work history of the Black Country. I 'rediscovered' by accident George through his blog and have been following it for last couple of years. Again his principles along with his humanitarism has shone through his blog. Again please pass on condolences. Regards.

Today comrade George Barnsby breathed his last and thus ended the life of one the most remarkable stalwarts of working-class movement, a dedicated Communist and a political activist who exposed the role of the war criminals like Bush and Blair and their genocidal wars. He had fought against the Nazis in the Second World War and had witnessed the price humanity paid for such wars. He firmly upheld the cause of peace and social justice and his website articles he wrote when he was in his late eightees are a living testimony of his revolutionary zeal and committment.

Comrade George Barnsby was a close friend of mine and I feel deeply sad on his pasing away.

On this sad occasion I offer my condolences to his family and friends.

Oh, By Gosh, By Golly, By Jingo, George, you refer to Kipling's poem: "If." A good piece of advice, but the author, otherwise, not your sort of man, perhaps? ...
Keep going. Get well soon. Dave H. etc.
